Alps Touchpad Driver Windows 8 Dell N5110Hi Johnny, Thank you for posting the question in Microsoft Community! The Alps touchpad driver is not compatible with Windows 8 operating system and hence. I have good news for laptop users with built in ALPS Touchpads. Acer/Gateway (same company) have been generous to create a new driver for Windows 8 32. ![]() Http://www.devicedoctor.com/driver.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmirror1.devicedoctor.com%2Fdownload%2Fdrivers%2F6d9c4c97ec076b0683ed6cf90e454a2c%2FTouchPad_ALPS_7. Note getting the latest correct Touchpad driver in terms of unofficial driver sets can be a bit difficult so I have listed all the versions I have found so far and Dell’s OS compatibility. Note that many Drivers list only as Windows 7 Drivers will work with Windows 10. I recommend trying with the newest .exe first and if it doesn’t work then go for the older versions. This may take several versions to test on your specific model. Please note I am an individual and not an organisation and don’t have access to all Dell Hardware to test. To test you will need to access the Device Manager for Windows 10, right click the Start Button and Select Device Manger: Expand Mice and other pointing devices (it will help avoid confusion if you don’t have a USB mouse attached). Right click the Touchpad listed as “PS/2 Compatible Mouse” in this case and select properties: You can now see what the driver version is. The driver version is from Windows 10 (10240) and is listed as a generic driver from 2006: In this case the system is a Latitude D530 and from the Dell FTP website has an Alps Touchpad: http://downloads.dell.com/published/Pages/index.html The latest driver is listed as 7.x2.101.230 and the release date is 22nd of August 2013. Note this is the date Dell bundled the driver and not the date of the driver. From the driver format I can tell it is an Alps Touchpad however for those less familiar to the Touchpad driver formats simply launch the installer of the latest driver Dell list. Note it will say Alps, Synaptics etc. in this case it says Alps so we are sure its an Alps Touchpad. Attempting to install the latest driver from the list 10.1207.101.102 reports a successful install which is wrong and can thus confuse users. The device manager however is not updated so no driver is installed: An error message then shows: “Installation” of the driver gives no change in the Device manager… or in Programs and Features. Going down and installing other new versions leads to similar results. 8.1200.101.217 however changes “PS/2 Compatible Mouse” to “Dell Touchpad”. You can see the device manager the driver version matches 8.1200.101.217 significantly newer than 7.x2.101.230 offered by the Dell FTP website for the Latitude D530 directly. This driver is installed because the device manager is updated. In addition the Alps Touchpad is listed under programs and icon in the notification tray: All the versions are consistent with Device Manager: If you would like to help your fellow Dell users and have done this test in Windows 10, please use the Snipping Tool and post the snip on OneDrive. Then please post the OneDrive link, driver version and model of your Dell in the comments. Advanced users report if you managed to update any drivers by extracting the driver and updating the driver via the Device Manager. There have been numerous problems with TouchPad drivers in Windows 8 and later so I would appreciate it if you left feedback in the comments on what Touchpad driver works best for you in your system. I will leave screenshots of tested systems at the bottom … Alps Alps Touchpad – 10.1207.101.102 – Windows 10 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.118 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.115 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.112 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.110 Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.109 Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.104 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit Alps TouchPad – 8.1200.101.218 Alps TouchPad – 8.1200.101.217 – Windows 10 32/64 Bit Alps TouchPad – 8.1200.101.214 Alps Touchpad – 8.1200.101.209 – Windows 8 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1200.101.134 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 8.1200.101.129 – Windows 7/8.0 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1209.101.217 Windows 7 32 Bit/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1209.101.204 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.x2.101.230 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.x2.101.228 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.x2.101.223 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1×02.101.102 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1207.101.225 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1207.101.223 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1207.101.108 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.4.102.104 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.102.101.224 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.102.101.223 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.102.101.101 Windows 7 32/64 Bit Alps Touchpad – 7.1007.115.102 Windows 7 32/64 Bit For my DELL XPS M1330, running Windows 10 Pro final release, the “Synaptics Touchpad – 16.2.21 Windows 7 32 Bit” suits perfect even in modern apps Scrolling works like a charm. (…after days of testing…and many cups of coffee …) 1.Step: If another Synaptics driver is installed, uninstall it and reboot system to get it clean! 2.Step: Right click “setup.exe” and select “Solving compatibility problems” 3.Step: Install version above by clicking “Test settings…” and after setup save compatibility settings and reboot your system again 4.Step: After reboot in the settings activate h-/ and v-scrolling. 5.Step: Enjoy! Good luck ! Btw: This driver doesn’t suit only Win7-32 but also Win7-64/Win8-32/Win8-64. After many many weeks of testing, I finally found the right Touchpad driver for my XPS Studio 1555 running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit The “latest” driver on the Dell support site – for Windows 7 – is 14.0.2, but Dell specifically stated that the laptop is NOT tested for Windows 10 I tried the drivers from the Synaptics website (none worked). The touchpad worked but I *really* wanted 2-finger gesture scrolling support. I tried versions 19.x.x, 18.x.x and 15.x.x from this website – no luck. Finally, I installed 16.6.13.0 and viola! 2-finger gesture works again! I did notice that there is a slight deal with the left mouse click button, but it’s something I can live with. I’ll try tweaking the settings to see if I could fix it. Glad I found this site. Running a Dell Latitude 5420A with an Alps touchpad and Windows 10 32-bit. The touchpad was sticking badly since the OS upgrade, but the Alps Touchpad – 8.1206.101.118 – Windows 7/8.1 32/64 Bit driver seems to have fixed this. Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum This is the method the wireless cards use to transmit data over the frequency spectrum. The other method is frequency hopping. Direct sequence spreads the data over one frequency range (channel) while frequency hopping jumps from one narrow frequency band to another many times per second. ESSID An Infrastructure configuration could also support roaming capability for mobile workers. More than one BSS can be configured as an Extended Service Set (ESS). Users within an ESS could roam freely between BSSs while served as a continuous connection to the network wireless stations and Access Points within an ESS must be configured with the same ESSID and the same radio channel. Ethernet Ethernet is a 10/100Mbps network that runs over dedicated home/office wiring. Users must be wired to the network at all times to gain access. Gateway A gateway is a hardware and software device that connects two dissimilar systems, such as a LAN and a mainframe. In Internet terminology, a gateway is another name for a router. Generally a gateway is used as a funnel for all traffic to the Internet 32 AirLive WN-370USB User’s Manual 5. Appendix IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Infrastructure. An integrated wireless and wired LAN is called an Infrastructure configuration. Infrastructure is applicable to enterprise scale for wireless access to central database, or wireless ISM Band The FCC and their counterparts outside of the U.S. have set aside bandwidth for unlicensed use in the so-called ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band. Spectrum in the vicinity of 2.4 GHz, in particular, is being made available (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band. Spectrum in the vicinity of 2.4 GHz, in particular, is being made available of users around the globe. Local Area Network (LAN) A LAN is a group of computers, each equipped with the appropriate network adapter card connected by cable/air, that share applications, data, and peripherals. All connections are made via cable or wireless media, but a LAN does not use telephone services. It typically spans a single building or campus. Network A network is a system of computers that is connected. Data, files, and messages can be transmitted over this network. Networks may be local or wide area networks. Protocol A protocol is a standardized set of rules that specify how a conversation is to take place, including the format, timing, sequencing and/ or error checking. SSID A Network ID unique to a network. Only clients and Access Points that share the same SSID are able to communicate with each other. This string is case-sensitive. Static IP Addressing A method of assigning IP addresses to clients on the network. In networks with Static IP address, the network administrator manually assigns an IP address to each computer. Once a Static IP address is assigned, a computer uses the same IP address every time it reboots and logs on to the network, unless it is manually changed. Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) The Temporal Key Integrity Protocol, pronounced tee-kip, is part of the IEEE 802.11i encryption standard for wireless LANs. TKIP is the next generation of WEP, the Wired Equivalency Protocol, which is used to secure 802.11 wireless LANs. TKIP provides per-packet key mixing, a message integrity check and a re-keying mechanism, thus fixing the flaws of WEP. AirLive WN-370USB User’s Manua 33 5. Appendix Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) TCP/IP is the protocol suite developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). It is widely used in corporate Internet works, because of its superior design for WANs. TCP governs how packet is sequenced for transmission the network. The term “TCP/IP” is often used generically to refer to the entire suite of related protocols. Transmit / Receive The wireless throughput in Bytes per second averaged over two seconds. Wi-Fi Alliance The Wi-Fi Alliance is a nonprofit international association formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of wireless Local Area Network products based on IEEE 802.11 specification. The goal of the Wi-Fi Alliance’s members is to enhance the user experience through product interoperability. The organization is formerly known as WECA. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) The Wi-Fi Alliance put together WPA as a data encryption method for 802.11 wireless LANs. WPA is an industry-supported, pre-standard version of 802.11i utilizing the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), which fixes the problems of WEP, including using dynamic keys. Wide Area Network (WAN) A WAN consists of multiple LANs that are tied together via telephone services and / or fiber optic cabling. WANs may span a city, a state, a country, or even the world Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) Now widely recognized as flawed, WEP was a data encryption method used to protect the transmission between 802.11 wireless clients and APs. However, it used the same key among all communicating devices. WEP’s problems are well-known, including an insufficient key length and no automated method for distributing the keys. WEP can be easily cracked in a couple of hours with off-the-shelf tools. Wireless LAN (WLAN) A wireless LAN does not use cable to transmit signals, but rather uses radio or infrared to transmit packets through the air. Radio Frequency (RF) and infrared are the commonly used types of wireless transmission. Most wireless LANs use spread spectrum technology. It offers limited bandwidth, usually under 11Mbps, and users share the bandwidth with other devices in the spectrum; however, users can operate a spread spectrum device without licensing from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). 34 AirLive WN-370USB User’s Manual 5. Appendix Fragment Threshold The proposed protocol uses the frame fragmentation mechanism defined in IEEE 802.11 to achieve parallel transmissions. A large data frame is fragmented into several fragments each of size equal to fragment threshold. By tuning the fragment threshold value, we can get varying fragment sizes. The determination of an efficient fragment threshold is an important issue in this scheme. If the fragment threshold is small, the overlap part of the master and parallel transmissions is large. This means the spatial reuse ratio of parallel transmissions is high. In contrast, with a large fragment threshold, the overlap is small and the spatial reuse ratio is low. However high fragment threshold leads to low fragment overhead. Hence there is a trade-off between spatial re-use and fragment overhead. Fragment threshold is the maximum packet size used for fragmentation. Packets larger than the size programmed in this field will be fragmented If you find that your corrupted packets or asymmetric packet reception (all send packets, for example). You may want to try lowering your fragmentation threshold. This will cause packets to be broken into smaller fragments. These small fragments, if corrupted, can be resent faster than a larger fragment. Fragmentation increases overhead, so you'll want to keep this value as close to the maximum value as possible. RTS (Request To Send) Threshold The RTS threshold is the packet size at which packet transmission is governed by the RTS/CTS transaction. The IEEE802.11-1997 standard allows for short packets to be transmitted without RTS/CTS transactions. Each station can have a different RTS threshold. RTS/CTS is used when the data packet size exceeds the defined RTS threshold. With the CSMA/CA transmission mechanism, the transmitting station sends out an RTS packet to the receiving station, and waits for the receiving station to send back a CTS (Clear to Send) packet before sending the actual packet data. This setting is useful for networks with many clients. With many clients, and a high network load, there will be many more collisions. By lowering the RTS threshold, there may be fewer collisions, and performance should improve. Basically, with a faster RTS threshold, the system can recover from problems faster. RTS packets consume valuable bandwidth, however, so setting this value too low will limit performance. Beacon Interval In addition to data frames that carry information from higher layers, 802.11 include management and control frames that support data transfer. The beacon frame, which is a type of management frame, provides the "heartbeat" of a wireless LAN, enabling stations to establish and maintain communications in an orderly fashion. Beacon Interval represents the amount of time between beacon transmissions. Before a station enters power save mode, the station needs the beacon interval to know when to wake up to receive the beacon (and learn whether there are buffered frames at the access point). AirLive WN-370USB User’s Manua 35 5. Appendix Preamble Type There are two preamble types defined in IEEE 802.11 specification. A long preamble basically gives the decoder more time to process the preamble. All 802.11 devices support a long preamble. The short preamble is designed to improve efficiency (for example, for VoIP systems). The difference between the two is in the Synchronization field. The long preamble is 128 bits, and the short is 56 bits. WPA2 It is the second generation of WPA. WPA2 is based on the final IEEE 802.11i amendment to the 802.11 standard. 802.1x Authentication 802.1x is a framework for authenticated MAC-level access control, defines Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) over LANs (WAPOL). The standard encapsulates and leverages much of EAP, which was defined for dial-up authentication with Point-to-Point Protocol in RFC 2284. Beyond encapsulating EAP packets, the 802.1x standard also defines EAPOL messages that convey the shared key information critical for wireless security. Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Security issues are a major concern for wireless LANs, AES is the U.S. government’s next-generation cryptography algorithm, which will replace DES and 3DES. 36 AirLive WN-370USB User’s Manual WN-370USB No more missed important software updates!
